We’ve all heard of anti-virus, but we don’t all know exactly what it does or why we need it. We know it protects us, but from what?
An anti-virus is a key layer of protection for our computers. Many think that they know what they are doing and won’t go anywhere near potential virus sites and files, but being careful in your browsing simply isn’t enough. Anti-virus is essential for any computer anywhere as long as it is connected to the internet or will have a USB device at any point. Infected files can be spread in numerous ways, potentially even through websites that we consider to be “safe”.
A firewall is a key part of our computers safety, but it isn’t enough. Anti-virus protects your computer in the event that infected files come through the firewall. We are always connecting jump drives, cell phones, and cameras to our PC’s, and these are devices that could pick up infected files from other computers or apps which can transfer easily to our PC’s when connected.
There are hundred’s of anti-virus products on the market, but not all are created equal. Pretty much all of these products should stop nearly all infected files, but a certain few are faster, easier to work with, and take up less of your computer’s speed. Many products can also be annoying and obnoxious, giving us constant pop-ups and notifications. Many of you at some point have probably had a PC that came with an anti-virus installed on it such as McAfee or Norton and you’ve gotten notifications every 5 minutes bothering you with updates or issues.
