Steve Jobs was incredibly proud of the iPod and he was right. It was really a magical device when it came out, although most of us take it for granted as technology has come a long way. So when it launched and became a stellar success, the iPod team deserved appreciation for it.

We could say that the iPod was the precursor of the Metaverse, because it was the first device with which we could carry anywhere, and with which we could access 1000+ songs.

Product (iPod itself): Apple created a product with a great user experience and the right balance of features. The intuitive user interface of the iPod to navigate the playlists, the compact and elegant design, the large capacity without being bulky, etc. “1000s of songs in your pocket”. Most competing products at the time were either too limited (Rio flash players) or too bulky and difficult to use (Archos HDD players).

Marketing: A great campaign from a company that has always been seen as “cool”. Being “cool” is a prerequisite for success in the pop music business. iPod ads focused on the trendy “lifestyle” and made things “fun” (i.e. cheering people on cool new songs). The iPod was a cultural phenomenon just like the music itself. In contrast, Apple’s competitors like Dell, Microsoft, IBM, HP are too closely associated with “business” or “establishment” in the minds of consumers.

Apple Store: Apple had significant sales opportunities through accessories, which allowed it to create an entire industry of iPod-compatible products that later strengthened the position of the device in the market. This process allowed the integration of the car, stereo connections, alarm clocks, and more with the iPod, and of course, achieve a win-win relationship with the brands involved.

Distribution: The ability to buy songs at 99 cents, download podcasts, discover new music, etc. from the iTunes store helped. People had more and new content to easily access their iPods. Apple’s decision to put the iTunes store on Windows created an even larger market and also a showcase for Apple products to an audience that otherwise wouldn’t have considered them.

In short, Steve Jobs more than a product sold us the experience of bringing music online wherever we wanted, sold us a lifestyle, a status, something intangible that other brands did not offer. Therefore, we can say that the iPod changed how brands make the presentations of their products.
